PC gaming is expensive...You should get a solid state drive

Building a PC with that kind of hardware will take time and patience. Take a break if u have to.

If you can get your hands on a quad core instead of dual core it'd be sweet.
-
If you have a micro center they have pretty good prices.Never skimp on the processor get a quad core.

Upgrade, pay now, save later. Solid state drive.
i7 instead of i5.
2x8gb ram (up to 32gb or more).
Micro center for most, check dealram.com, tiger direct, newegg also. -
I know nothing about hardware, but what software suite will you be running?

I always liked a smaller faster drive for the OS and critical processes then something bigger and slower for all the crap that collects (movies, music, etc).

pm me if you want the best hardware for your Money.

ASUS nvida?
And and what's the point of a quad core? No one has really coded anything that takes advantages of all the cores yet so just get an i5 and overlock it like hell!Solid states are too expensive. And pay now save later is a load of rubbish! It's technology! They always bring out new stuff and the older stuff gets cheaper as a result!

An i7 is not ideal right now, but when your favorite games upgrade their engines, you're gonna eventually kick yourself in the ass (sooner than you'd like to). As far as solid state drives go, you just need one larhe enough for your operating system(s) files. You use it as the primary and use your regular drive as planned with 1 TB.

I was trying to guide him away from making the ultimate mistakes such as building a disposable gamer pc with the max ram of 8gb and a 1155 socket that won't take an i7 processor.ASUS nvida?

i7 I wouldn't bother yet anyways cos they are bringing out the new chipsets soon anyways so wait till they do that and see what they have, cos at the minimum the i7 would drop in price when they do if there new stuff is to expensive. An i7 is not ideal right now, but when your favorite games upgrade their engines, you're gonna eventually kick yourself in the ass (sooner than you'd like to).
