What makes someone alive?
Forums › General Discussion › What makes someone alive?-
If someone was on a machine(in coma, etc) to keep them alive, would you consider them alive? I would not, If you need external care to supply you with life, you should not be alive.

YOU says:
Sparta, there is nothing your going to say that's going to justify the way that your acting there in Gd. There is a difference between "rights" and manners/ettiquite. And you have been around long enough to know the difference. And yes Sparta, telling someone to "shove it" is a figure of speech child. you can keep dancing around the words all you want. Fact is, what your doing is wrong, and if nothing else, your reasoning behind it is what makes it so. Good day sir. I can't wait till your wiped out completely and then eventually banned for trolling.2 min agoDELETE

My son is laying in icu on life support. He is no longer in a coma but i ASSURE YOU he is still very much alive. I can ask him a question and he can open an eye amd squeeze my hand. Even in his condition its plain to see he is very much alive.

IMO. If there is a heartbeat there is life, just because people that are trapped inside there body or in a coma can't live life to the extent that you "require" doesn't mean they don't have the right be seen as alive
-
Ty magna. If you were here you would know that as long as there is a chance, then he is still alive. Ty for your support. We need it

I read an article recently about a guy with an artificial heart. He literally has no heart and instead has a pump in his chest. The guy's wife said it is the weirdest thing because he does not have a heartbeat. When you listen to his chest with a stethoscope, you instead hear a whirring or whooshing kind of a sound. And the guy is fully functional and lives a normal life now. Blew my mind to read that because I didn't know it was possible to live without a heart. All that was to say that there doesn't necessarily need to be a heartbeat for there to be life.IMO. If there is a heartbeat there is life, just because people that are trapped inside there body or in a coma can't live life to the extent that you "require" doesn't mean they don't have the right be seen as alive

Depends on definition of 'life'. Of there is heartbeat Ina body, they are certainly 'living'. However, in the worst circumstances, they possibly could not be considered 'alive'
-
Being alive is a very complicated thing. Defining what life 'is' is only slightly less hard then defining what a soul is, or painting a verbal picture of the source of creation -- other then relying on religious terms.
I can tell you why there is life. It's because if life wasn't there to experience the universe, the universe may never have proof it existed.
Mind you some would argue that since we can't universally define what is, or isn't, life; that we all never really existed, and therefore the universe doesn't really exist. So everything is kinda pointless... And anything you experience is just a figment of your imagination. -
Last year my wife slipped into a coma 4 times. I was with her in the hospital each time she progressed slowly into a coma (it took hours each time and progressed from being alert and happy to being confused and unable to understand the difference between a knife and fork to not being able know how to swallow medicine to not recognizing me anymore to crying and screaming for her mother who died years ago to finally lapsing in a coma where she couldn't be awakened).
Very heart wrenching and you really get tired of doctors and nurses constantly reminding you that she needs a living will. The first coma I got her out of by bringing our poodle in and letting him lick her face until she came back from wherever her mind had retreated. Yes, most hospitals will let you bring a dog in in special cases...even Mayo. The second two comas I used a washrag and faked her out by pretending to be the dog...and the last one neither I or the dog could get her out of so after 24 hours of coma they coded her, asked
