Scranton pay cuts
Forums › General Discussion › Scranton pay cuts-
I am a CA citizen but was watching the news and apparently the mayor of Scranton PA has cut pay of city workers to minimum wage (that includes firemen and police!)
I for one am outraged that the people that are in charge of protecting and serving a city have been disrespected so harshly. Im not sure how it is in PA but in CA, you can make more than minimum wage making groceries....
Also, i remember how much i started not giving a fuck wheni was making minimum wage. How can PA expe t someone to be enthusiastic about risking their life for min wage??!

*bagging groceries

What a shame.

They can always get a job at Dunder mifflin.... heard the pay is good there lol

It's all the government workers (I'm pretty sure, anyway). Even his own pay was dropped.
-
It applied to government workers only. The municipality is broke and does not have the ability to take on a loan.
At the end of the day, the state will likely have to bail out the city.
-
Minimum wage cause notgiveafuckitis and causes fuckitol addiction. It's definitely not something you want police officers or firemen to have.

Coming to a city near you...
This is what happens when a government cant find someone to loan them money
-
They still get health benefits, right?
-
It was either that or 80% of them get fired. This is what happens when government spends more money than it takes in. They always have been able to run out and get another credit card. Too bad the tit has run dry. Maybe people will begin to understand that the government cannot continue to provide all these benefits without much contribution by the employees.

Its funny how the media always makes things sound worse than they are...
-
The cut is temporary and when (if?) this crisis is solved they will receive retro pay for lost wages. Two years ago PA gov't workers didn't get paid at all for nearly two months.

They call it SCRANTON! What! The Electric City!

Things are bad in pennsylvania as a whole. Most of the cities are at or above the national average for unemployment. And the state doesn't have enough money to bail out the municipalities. However, it was said already that it's only a temporary thing and workers will be paid back. They also have an option for early retirement or layoff. Many chose min wage as opposed to layoff. Also, due to pay cuts, unemployment will kick in due to the large cut in pay.
On a related topic, I found out cops in Youngstown, OH only start at $9.20/hr. And that's a crime riddled city.

California isn't doing much, if any, better. Vallejo, a city of 115,000 recently went bankrupt. Now Stockton, CA (pop almost 300,000) has become the largest US municipality to declare bankruptcy. Both cities were decimated by the housing market crash, but somewhere in all this lies deeper problems.

Don't know about USA but in Canada cops are way over paid
