Six of his lifeguard coworkers quit the company after saying they'd have done the same thing. Evidently he was fired for "leaving his post unattended" during the rescue. This is something you'd read about in The Onion.

Good for them. I would have left too. An employer like them deserves to have no employees. They can suffer for their actions ad they will learn next time... People who can save a persons life are not expendable- when try do something commendable and you release them, you are giving that man the opposite of what he deserves. If I was that lifeguard, and actually sat there, and let the person suffer, and have the paramedics come later, and probably too late- I would be unable to go home. Self guilt would override and it would become unbearable knowing you could have eaisly saved his life. He did the right thing, and want a person like him as my friend. He did the right thing, that Anybody with a heart would do.

Whoever fired this brave lifeguard must have some bad neck injuries from having his head up his ass the whole time.
