Danny Elfman is definitely one of the best composers in this modern age. Didn't he compose "Alice's Theme" for Alice in Wonderland?Danny elfman, prince, as far as musicians...singers are a different category...Adele is great...as a singer...Steve perry...as a singer...

Eminem dominates rap world, u can't really pick a best musician ever when there are so many genres
-
For JB age... Kid is full of success. My wife qq watching some show about him yesterday... Kid sold out 2 shows.... In 30 seconds. Sure not my type of music but success is success
-
For me right now anyway(as opinions change and grow) it has to be Tommy Emmanuel.
-
I wasn't gonna touch this one. It's too debatable.
IMO Bob Marley is one. Not just for his music but for the message he was sending too. One love, one heart.
Skin color doesn't matter. We're all people. We all bleed red. He changed me inside as a person. Listening to his music affected me in a profound way.
I agree with others posted too. Zappa, Miles Davis, John Lennon, and of course Eric Clapton. -
Michael Jackson
-
Tom Waits

Elvis and Cash were pretty good, Hendrix was amazing, Clapton still is, the Beatles together were amazing, Pink Floyd has their good ones, but are not the best compared to Marley, and Cobain was good, but I dont like his songs. Ted Nugent is undeserving of such a title to the one who mentioned it. Many more were good, just very unknown.

If you are looking at rap, #1 has gotta be Run-DMC. The only rappers who thought of combining their song with Aerosmith. Google it.

Even though there is not a real anwser to this question, I would to offer two people that changed the way we looked at music:
Elvis Presley
Micheal JacksonEach made a mark in their generation that is still felt today.
I think goes without saying that Elvis is one of the greatest icons ever in music. He crossed barriers. Most older people can remember the first time they saw Elvis.Micheal Jaskson has set so many records that some may never be broken. He crossed barriers too. I bet most of us has at least one MJ album.
Both have impact that cannot be denied. -

And success has no corelation to skill. And as far as "the best", that is a matter of opinion and the subject is to broad. Try to go into a little more detail when picking a subject to discuss, it helps it stay on topic and relative. For JB age... Kid is full of success. My wife qq watching some show about him yesterday... Kid sold out 2 shows.... In 30 seconds. Sure not my type of music but success is success

Paul Simon is up there.
I love Nugent, but best ever, not even close.
-
Stevie wonder played alot of instruments on his album songs in the key of life which is always up there in public polls
-
I'd have to say that John Valby has them all beat. The greatest ever hands down ...

I agree about Elvis definitely. If it wasn't for him rock and roll probably wouldn't exist. He broke the mold for music. He was one of the Beatles biggest influences.Even though there is not a real anwser to this question, I would to offer two people that changed the way we looked at music:

And MJ deserves respect and recognition. He might have been fucked as a person but his contribution to music is undeniable. -
Micheal Jackson did do some weird things, but he was a great musician.

One three letter last name takes the cake for me at least.
Vai.
-
Theres so many ....Bob Marley , Tupac to name only 2 !
-
Tupac Shakur. Enough said.
Judging from a perspective of looking at the 90's era. -
Er, for singer it would be Frank Sinatra or Louis Armstrong. For like, musical, Steven Sondheim. For just rock, probably one of the Rolling Stones or Beatles. Sam Roberts also, he's new, but he's amazing.
-
Probably Tupac Shakur. I mean the guy changed hip-hop and his lyrics actually have meaning behind them.

Frank sinatra

Tarzan

Any musician who can write something powerful to give you chills deserves a vote. Bob Dylan's "Hurricane", for example.

Im surprised nobody has mentioned Johann Pachelbel. Maybe not the greatest ever, but Canon in D is certainly a great song. Pachelbel might win for most influential composer, because when you think about it, just about every song in existence follows the same pattern as Canon in D! Maybe not the same notes, but the same pattern!
