I can honestly say that I have never heard someone say "the," in this context, that I recall.
Which is something I'm now finding a little odd, given this thread.

First time I heard it was from my wife. She got totally offended when I told her A sounds better. I correct her EVERY time I hear her say it. Not so much bc I expect her to change but in the hopes shell get so sick of me that she'll avoid the idiom all together. 😝

What made me think of it was I was actually reading a V post and someone said "All of THE sudden". It's like chalk on a blackboard.

Think about when you use "a" vs "the". "A" typically refers to a generality or one of many, (i.e. there is a storm coming, could I have a glass of water (not THE storm or THE glass of water).
When people use "the" they are referring individually to a specific thing. (i.e. pass the salt, gonna go pick up the kids).
Since we are referring to a general and non-unique "sudden" moment, it would be incorrect to refer to it as "the sudden". I vote for "all of A sudden", even though technically it is an idiom as noted above and thus either one is acceptable.

... A ...
Using "all of the sudden" makes me feel challenged. -
