I Messed up...

Alright, for starters this has nothing to do with TW, and i have terrible stage fright. In real life I'm currently at a mock government camp in Texas and was running for comissioner of land office. I had prepared a speech which I thought was wonderful( I had 3 minutes to give it). I decided to try to overcome my Fear in the spirit Of the camp. Here's a short transcript of my speech:
Wow, there is a lot of you.
Okay, I'm (insert name) and I want to tell you a short story about something that happened as I was driving.
I was stopping at a red light, when I noticed something awe inspiring at the side of the road. As I looked, I said to my friend, "man, look at that gas!"
(that killed)
Then after 30ish seconds of stating my platform, I look at the crowd and basicly could not get a word out for 3 seconds(felt like 10 years to me). -
After some awesome encouragement from the other guys, I was able to finish, but Im still pretty sure I blew it. Also, while speaking, my leg was tapping furiously for the entire time which I thought was odd.
However, there is some talk that I may be still elected in which case I have to give another speech.
Do you guys have any tips on how to overcome mild stage fright, and or, have had a similar experience? -
I hear the best cure for stage fright is to say the speech naked ( i think that's right )

I used to hate any form of public speaking. I have found that it gets easier with time. Really knowing and enjoying the subject you are speaking about also helps.
-
Just realize that nothing horrible happened because you had to get up there. Nobody died. You didn't throw up on the stage. You didn't pass out. The only way that you get over it is repitition. The more you do something the better you get and the easier it gets.

How big of a crowd?

Practice. Each time you get up in front of an audience it gets easier. I still get butterflies in my stomach when I have to give a presentation, especially to a room full of strangers, but it is no longer terrifying.

As you give your presentation, glance around, but look just over the crowd's heads. Imaging they're not there. Also, practice it in front of a mirror.

Yup. I've given speeches before but usually they are to smaller groups. The process if me forgetting was like a chain reaction. I noticed the crowd which made me fear failure which made me forgetful.🔰࿈Ᏸลอ🔥Ᏸεαη࿈🔰 wrote:

Oh okay. I used to get really nervous when speaking in front of groups, but now its not so bad. The best piece of advice i can give is not to overprepare. I know this sounds dum but it works. What i mean is dont spend hours reading over your speech. The most I'd do is glance over it. Also find something for your fingers to play with, like a coin. Don't look at any one person, glance over the whole crowd. And lastly just lnow your gonna be fine. Its not the end of the world if it doesnt end well. Good luckZerø wrote:

I used to hate going up in front of everyone then I realized I'm a clown and picked up on stand up comedy. First night was a bust (but it's ok it wasn't busy that night either) next night was a kill. Now I look for crowd to entertain (but I hate being around alot of ppl... Strange lol)

What a great experience. Just use deep breathing to center and relax your muscles. Smile. Find a friendly supportive warm face in the crowd. Speak to them like it's one on one. Smile. Take your time. Breathe.
The more you do it, the easier it will become.
Please let us know how it goes! Good luck.😄

When I used to give speeches or readings. I used to get on the stage and give myself a few seconds before I started saying anything. This was mainly do I could get my breathing under control (Becuase I was nervous) and also just to get used to seeing the crowd. Then after that I would be fine.

Practice in front of a mirror, a friend, or by yourself. You should be able to overcome your fear.

Take your time. Don't rush into it straight away, pause a bit after each line you say, it gives you time to compose yourself, relax your breathing and swallow if your mouth gets dry. It may seem like an eternity of saying nothing but in reality it's only a second or so. But don't pause any longer than 3 seconds and try to refrain from pausing at all if you can manage it. After a minute or so you should be used to the audience and everything will come slightly more naturally. Also look confident, even if you do not feel so, the audience will know it; therefore speak loud and clear at a reasonable pace and make eye contact. It gets easier the more you do speeches, like anything practise makes perfect.

I am a highly experienced public speaker, and am comfortable speaking to 1000+ audiences with ease. I used to be nervous before speaking, but I learned how to stop it. I never look into a person's eyes... Always look behind the audience at something inanimate, but always shift gaze around the area, while refraining to stare at anything, or anyone. Another key is to go slower. Slowing down will have you make less mistakes and stumble less frequently, and it gives time for your listeners to reflect and process on the previous point. Third, always know what you are speaking. Practice until you have it nearly memorised so that when you present you feel comfortable, and not awkward from having to look at a sheet 80+% of the time. I can give more advice of you so wish, and share some stories and help for overcoming fright if you wish. Just drop me a PM, or reply in the forums and I will get back to you.

Finding a back of the room spot is great. Talk to the spot...like a clock or a lightswitch. You can return to your "spot" if you get rattled. Spots rarely laugh or disapprove. Also...don't forget to breathe regularly to pace yourself.
-
Also, you just never know about speaking/singing mistakes. Instead of listening to several more identical things...now you stand out and they may now vote for you because they can easily remember you. Stranger things have happened. And if you appeared nervous...then it also appeared that it was important to you.

Thanks for the points ultra, the object to speak to makes speaking to thousands of people easy, and makes your mind block out much of the fact that you are frightened. I find it also makes you cool and calm, a redeeming factor in many things
