24 May
A cold and miserable night by the side of the road. The only lights being those of the road trains rushing by trying to get to Sydney overnight. This is as opposed to me who has taken a month on the road to get to hop #750. as the crow flies this measures 427km's from Sydney and 280 km's to go.
For those wanting an example of this distance 427km's is approximately the distance from New York, NY to Goffstown, New Hampshire.
The only good thing is Smokey has been left far behind, I am sure however that he is radioing ahead.

While I have not seen much of Smokey, I have been tapped twice by Immigration and Customs Agent Ulyanov. He can't really know about the.... Can he??? Doesn't matter as unless he gets a warrant and catches up he can't have a peek in the back of my truck. 😜 Anyway, my understanding is that he is busy watching Sydney Airport on a pretty full time basis.
Well I have reached hop 800 in North Albury. Nice to plant one in a reasonably well populated area for a change. I'm now 456 km's from the start and have 252 to go. Albury / Wodonga sits on the border between NSW and Victoria. Those interested in architecture, the city has a beautiful old time train station. I'm sure I have seen it used in period piece movies but can't think of any to name.

⚡NEWSFLASH ⚡
I have entered Victoria, hop 816, has done what no man in real life has done and jumped the Murray River, Australia's largest river with a 3.5km hop from Splitters Creek NSW to West Wodonga Vic.
I have taken before and after photo's to put in my scrap book for Eivel Kneivel had nothing on me....

Hop 850 lands me in Chiltern, Victoria. A historic town founded on the gold rush in the 1800's. The centre of town has retained the architecture of that era with many museums and period buildings for visitors to walk around and experience the early miners life.
With regard to Smokey, I think I have ditched him. I saw turf over to the east of Victoria but nothing so far on the Hum Highway as I travel down towards the airport.
As the crow flies;
Distance travelled = 488.1km's
Distance to destination = 224km's -

Wangaratta, you really have to give to us, you're not finding a town anywhere else in the world with this name. I decided to get off the freeway and have a night in a comfy motel bed. Driving into Wangaratta I recognize a problem with many small towns in rural areas. The towns wanted bypasses so as the trucks did not go through the town in the middle of the night. What they didn't realize was all the tourists who used to stop would also bypass the town.
Seems very quiet only 2 residents in town and a couple of turf here and there on the outskirts most likely left by fellow hoppers passing through.
As the crow flies:
Distance travelled = 521km's
Distance to destination = 194km's -
This is a very interesting story, keep it up. 👍

I normally only post when something important in the hopping occurs or every 50 hops. However Turfa has put out a call to be entertained, and he has entertained me in the past.
Well I have headed out of Wangaratta and the mobile rang, it was Lazy the mob member who stayed home to keep an eye on the turf which were funding the hop. Well Lazy called to say he had lost 9 of my turf. It appears he was having a late afternoon, pre night nap when Don Nitsos relieved me of half my West Pennant Hills turf and a couple of my Cherrybrook.
A quick PM to Don Nitsos and he advises he is just rebuilding and won't be capping me out of the area.

Sitting back while Busy is driving me down the Hume Highway and I see the silver lining. My turf are still generating a positive hourly income, and I can use the extra turf to have a longer hopping trail. My hopping trail now is 14 tur, the longest I have ever had and one that will get me to Melbourne without having to wait for the Don to increase my turf limit. (just need the spare cash to push throughout now).

Hop 950 sees me on the outskirts of Benalla, looks like they have a small airport here (Hey Nick....jk). Well I feel like I am becoming a hopping addict. My thoughts are to tackle Perth to Darwin. A trip of over 4,000 km's. Not sure which way to go, inland is shorter but less places to visit whilst the coastal way has more towns to stop in. Figure 800km's is taking me about 6 weeks so expect to take 24 weeks for this journey. Let me know if you want a diary on this trip.
Anyway back to Benalla, a town of 9,000 which looks a few Melbournites have weekenders here for access to the ski fields and fishing. There are also a few wineries in the area and although I have not tried any I would suggest the whites considering to location and climate.
As the crow flies:
Distance travelled = 553km's
Distance to destination = 163km's -
Yes! We want a diary of the trip. I'm enjoying this one.

My I have slowed down, I'm running a smaller hop in Sydney but it is a lot more expensive.
Hop 1,000 has me in the small town of Violet. Sounds pretty doesn't it. A small and to be frankly honest nondescript town much like many I have passed through. It's main claim to fame being a tragic train accident where the Southern Aurora slammed full speed into a freight train. A tangled mess of twisted steel being a description of the aftermath of the accident in 1969.
As the crow flies:
Distance travelled = 580km's
Distance to destination = 130km's -
I love this thread!

What your destination point? Airport, CBD? Someone's house?
