Is immortality really that great or is it a curse?
Forums › General Discussion › Is immortality really that great or is it a curse?-
I just finished reading a book called Ender's Game and it got me thinking greatly at the end. I untimely thought about larger-than-life topics and the way Ender seemed live for many years after he killed the buggers, moving from place to place to avoid aging much, seemed to lose purpose in living itself. Not to mention the endless vastness of space when deeply thought of gives you a sadness knowing it has no boundaries to look for, just an empty void without end. The way ender moved from world to world in the infinite of space, makes you see that without purpose, life turns so dull. If you had eternity, you outlive a defined existence, natural human existence. Humans have a defined end so they have reason to do much in a few decades or just over a century of time, since they will have a known end. Immorality defeats it though, you have no termination and thus, purpose, one of the very general ways of life that drives humanity onwards, is lost.

So my question is this: If truly given immorality, would you endure it or end it all?
-
I would endure it. Suicide isn't worth it. Perhaps the longer you live, the more wisdom you gain...Unless You're Zeus..In which case, you'd be rather dumb.
-
Immortality is a blessing for the young, a curse for the old.
Who wants to grow old and watch their lived ones die while you struggle on?
But who wouldn't want to stay young with their friends forever?
In the end it's a curse; You can't stay young and neither can your loved ones. -
I would endure it. Who knows how much good you could do if you never died, adding the wisdom of the last generation on to the next.
-
Oh I forgot to add, Ender untimely outlasted all his old friends and his not close family
members aside from his close relative that he loves Valentine. -
Ender's Game is awesome.
I have to say, immortality is a curse.
I don't have time to type more. -
Enders game is a great read, but the books following were very disappointing compared to it.
-
Fuck that. I'd take immortality any day of the week. You could honestly do whatever the hell you want with no lasting reprecussions to yourself. Id live with that.
-
Edward Cullen. Immortal vampire. Therefore, curse.
End of topic.

Ender wasn't immortal, he lived a normal life span. It was just spread out due to time dilation.

Enders shadow is ok, but takes place on earth. Xenophage, diff planet. And maybe 1 more?.... None as good as Enders game. -

Aw, Enders game!!! Good read!
I choose to be mortal. Live the life I'm given with the ones I love. -
Dang it, I hadn't finished Ender's Game! Gahh!!!

Of course, I had a feeling a few spoilers would happen. Go figure it turns out I spoil it slightly for someone. Trust me though, it is quite different from what you expect so do not worry about that ruining the book 👍Dang it, I hadn't finished Ender's Game! Gahh!!!

In order....
Enders game, speaker for the dead, xenocide, children of the mind.
Enders Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets, Shadow of the Giant.Chronologically, Enders Game and Enders Shadow overlap in time. Then comes the rest of the Shadow Series. Then comes the remaining 3 books o the Ender's game series.
The 3 other books in the Enders game series are a lot different than the first one. But it depends on what you like.

I would take immortality despite its flaws.

To pass up the choice would be selfish in my opinion.
Imagine what you could do?
You have an unlimited time to research something such as the cure to cancer.
You could master anything due to the unusual amount of time you have to practise.
Even deep space travel due to the lack of ageing. -
Hell! You could donate your body to science to see why you are immortal.
Could cure death for everyone. -

I would wreck havoc on all humanity 👿
I can't die so fuck it 😜

OSC wrote Enders Game, then Speaker for the Dead, then Xenocide, then Enders Shadow (I think).
I have read the first two.
There are other ways to read the series though, other than the per the date published.
Google on Enderverse or the Ender Series to get a wiki page on chronology to decide what to read next.
I loved the end of Enders Game and aspects of Speaker for the Dead that dealt with the "virtual immortality" issue. I only call it virtual since Ender is still aging. Just very slowly relative to earth, for example.
I loved trying to wrap my brain around it and pondering what it would be like to meet one's descendants hundreds or thousands of years into the future due to space travel.
