I have been. My tip is that there is this one beach that you DO NOT swim at unless your an expert. My little broths almost got swept out to see by standing ankle deep. It's pretty bad there.

I've got a lot of tips. But first, are you a kid going with your parents? (your post sounds like that might be the case and if so it will be more about activities and less about MaiTais...)

Kid or not poipu'u is awesome, ele'ele valley is beautiful, salt ponds is pretty cool for swimming, and north shore for surfing. U can't go all the way around the island cause it's still fucked up from hurricane iniki back in 92 but the places u can go are beautiful. Oh and u gotta go to barking sands it's cool there too. Two warnings tho, they have wild chickens there, that was interesting to see, and don't take to offense if a lot of the locals look mad all the time, they don't like outsiders there, I'm from big island and even I don't get warm welcomes there, it's a Hawaii thing
-
Yep... One of the most beautiful places on earth. Go and just enjoy...
-
Ok. If not a kid... Here's my list. First, north shore. Say it with me... You want to go All the way to the end. Ke'e beach and work back (maybe stop in hanalie on way for bfast - place on left next to bubba burger); go for 2-hr hike from ke'e along napalli coast - amazing views and easy hike; from there
-
Head back stopping soon at Tunnles Beach. Best snorkeling on island. Go in at far end (east) as current is steady west and you can float over awesome reefs, turtles and all that. Get out and take postcard pics of you with Bali Hai in background. Post on Fb and make all your friends cry; from there
-
Keep going east, lunch at any place in Hanalei - several awesome choices. After lunch, walk to Tahiti Nui - very local and real. Get MaiTai. Talk to bartender and locals, get annother Mai Tai and agree it is the best. Hear to pier 1 mile away and swim, annother postcard pic of bay and soak it up. Go east and hike down to Queens Bath. Swim with turtles and dive into pools... More later if you want, annother 3/4 of the island lined out...

I've been there as well as Maui and Oahu. It's my favorite, but you have to stay in the right places. I stayed by the airport, big mistake. It's not bad, but there are better places to stay. South around poi'pu is great or north around princeville is without a doubt the best place to stay. Great hiking, great beaches, and the Mai tais are good anywhere.
Hike the Nepali coast. Maybe not the whole thing if you're not up for a night of camping, but start north and head south to secret falls. Take lunch and water!
The water isn't bad. You can get rip currents anywhere. They are easy to deal with, it's an issue of education more so than skill.

There is a secret beach just North of Kapaa.
Get your car rental ahead of time--tons of cheap places. Don't pay for a super luxurious place; you won't need it.
Don't go on the West side of the island--it rains a lot more often, and there isn't much ouch there.Have fun!

I almost forgot. There is a little place called Lydgate Park; great little place to have a BBQ and there is an older local there that shares the name. Always there in the morning. He'll definitely tell you a few stories and give some great suggestions. I'm not sure, but he may even rent some places out -- don't remember the details, though.

Have to say, I disagree. Kauai is even more beautiful than Maui... And that's saying a lot! The food is amazing! Sushi = OMG!Just go to the big island instead ;)

I don't know Kauai, but on the Big Island some resorts put out big underwater lights. The lights attract plankton which attracts manta rays. Diving at night with 12 foot mantas was awesome.
