Visiting washington dc

Hi all. I am planning a road trip with a stop in at Washington dc. I was looking for some advice on:
1) places to stay - I have heard washington has some pretty rough areas. I am looking for some recommendations on safe areas that aren't to far from the core.
2) any special tourist things that are "must do", and
3) anything we should avoid! Thanks in advance!! Hoping to plant some turfs along the way!

Down by the river underneath 395 there's usually some good street parking and a decent restaurant right there. I always park there. It's not too far from the monuments. Just don't go wandering around away from the city center.

National Harbor is nice.

Oooo, and there is Mandarin Oriental right next to the mint...

I live just outside the city and you should probably look to stay outside and metro it into downtown for sites and historical sites. I woul suggest Alexandria, Tyson's, or Arlington. I wouldn't look too much in Md as PG county is a rough area.
As for must see sites all the national monument, mall, capital, memorials, and white house are within walking distance. Museums are right there also. But a must see is the holocaust museum. It is very sad and really hits home but is a must see. Caution if you have small children or really sensitive people with you. It will change your mood for the day.

As far as staying in a hotel, I probably wouldnt stay in DC itself, very expensive I would guess. In Maryland check out places in Rockville or silver spring, in Virginia, Falls Church or maybe Alexandria (also pricey too).
The Mall is great, plan on walking alot, it's about a mile I'm guessing from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. Along the way you have the the Washington monument(which is closed but you can still get close) the White House and all the different Smithsonian Mueseum. Definitely check out the air and space museum, it's near the Capitol ( and it's free as are most of the museums).
Another must is Arlington National Cemetary. It's in VA, but the metro takes you right there. Visit the tomb of the unknown soldiers and stay for the changing of the guard. The Kennedy eternal flame is also there.

Don't be afraid to take the metro, it's just about the easiest subway there is to use. All the lines are color coded. Buy a daily pass, I think there about 8 bucks now a days, but it's worth it if you go more then 2 places.
If you like Chinese food go to to Chinatown to eat. We play a game. We find the flithiest looking place, and it must have a roasted chicken hanging in the window. Usually they have the best food lol.

There's also the International Spy Museum, not free I think it's about $20. Great place, it's near chinatown.

Maryland isn't that bad, ok PG maybe, but everywhere else close by always get lumped in. I've never had a problem, and I visited and worked (delivery) all over the metro area.

Things to avoid: The local DC council... Any city that would elect and retain Marion Barry after all he's done must be rotten to the core.
Unless... You need drugs or women. Then by all means vist city hall.

The Holocaust museum.

Just wanted to say thanks!! You guys were extremely helpful. I didn't think I'd get such great responses! Thanks again!

When are you going? I'm going there on Thursday for a week vacation.

I'm not going until august, but trying to plan and book now. Going to Myrtle beach and trying to do as much as possible along the way. Looking to spend 2 nights in wash on the way down and 1 in Pitts on the way back. Haven't decided if gettysburgh is worth the detour. Any thoughts guys?

There are some awesome snowglobes too

I havent been to Gettysburg in years, if you have the time it's not that far out of the way. About 40 mins from the interstate on I-70 coming from DC. Little farther getting back to an interstate when you leave, unless you back track all the way to I-70 again.
If you're just looking for civil war stuff there's also Antietam Battlefield which is near Hagerstown. It's only 15 mins from the interstate, it won't take you out of your way on the way to Pittsburgh

*** 40 mins out of the way from Frederick I should have said. Gettysburg is about an hour and a half from DC
-
Stay in Alexandria, VA (somewhat pricey, but nice area) and take the metro into town for sightseeing.
-
Go to the changing of the guard it is so amazing how strict and in line they are!

If your out around 5pm and looking for dinner, right by union metro station and the Capitol (north capitol street) is the Dubliner. Not too pricey either. It's a great Irish pub that everybody I've met has enjoyed. Including myself 🍻

The smithsonian museums and the spy museum are great places.

The holiday inn is two blocks from the air and space museum about 140 or so night plus parking take a tour on one of the double decker busses. If your gonna walk Arlington cem wear great shoes. The crime and punishment museum is kewl. That's where Americas most wanted was filmed. See what's going on at wolftrap for shows and while your their your close to Dulles airport where they keep the shuttle plus you can drop turf. Don't forget a NATS game.

As far as crime the national mall is pretty safe but anything behind the capital stay clear of at night and around union station at night their are rats the size of vw bugs.
