It's not going to happen. I have my own idea but...it's very far off. In the Mayan calander the date reads The date, of the month day then 2012. I thunk it was read wrong, that 20-12 is a date. Back in those times leap years were never invented. And if you make it so they did then the calender would read 25-12, Jesus' birthday. But that's my theory

The only thing that will happen is a bunch of paranoid people will go nuts....and lots of people will buy huge items for Christmas if they believe. Or donate alot :). I don't believe anything will happen. For christians, the whole point of the end of the world is that you don't ever expect it to happen. It could happen Thursday for all I know. The end of the world is something that nobody will expect on that certain date.

These Mayans get so much credit. When my calendar runs out, I just buy a new one. I don't call into work and tell them I can't come in because the magnetic poles will be flipping over.

The Mayan calendar is a solar based calendar. And it is several calendars within a calendar. It is unaffected by leap years. 2012 refers to the Long Count calendar, which is basically the master calendar. In the same way that the Gregorian calendars all end on December 31, the long count calendar has en end date. It is believed be either December 20, 2012 or December 222, 2012 depending on which group of researchers you ask.
The next day, the calendar simply starts over, just as the Gregorian calendar does on January 1.

We all gonna die anyways why be scared! Lol I don't wanna die but I ain't afraid of it!

The Mayan long count calendar spans a period 5000+ years, and has already repeated a few times.

I have an app: Maya 3d. It is an awesome app if you are into the cultural aspect of it. Irecommend getting the paid version, as there are soooooo many more features, including definitions of all the different aspects of the calendar and how it works.

I plan on maxing all my credit out then on Dec. 23, I'm going to call all my creditors and tell thew I was one of the 2012 nut jobs, and "i guess I was wrong".
And I'm hoping that defense will work in bankruptcy court.
-
And if that doesn't work, then Im going to file a class action suit against all Mayan descendants seeking reparations.
-
I actually think I know what happened.
I think while they where making the calendar the maker died and nowone(spelling) knowed how to make it and threw it away. I think thAt's reasonable. -

That's not it at all. In the Mayan long count calendar, today's date would be written as 12.19.17.9.8
December 20, 2012 is 12.19.19.17.19 -

I know but you must apply missing dates from leap years that were not added and you also have to add that They lived in b.c.Add:COW🔓🌅🎆 wrote:

Only stupid people believe in the prophecy of a civilization that was wiped out by "the flu"

No. Leap year was created to keep the Gregorian calendar in order. The mayan cycles are solar, lunar and astrologically based. There is no need for leap year.
Leap year and leap days are only needed because of the 24 hr. day. The Mayans did not recognize a day as being 24 hours. They recognized the actual rotation of the earth. You can not think in terms of 24 hour days, 30/31 day months or even 365/366 day years.
The Mayan long count calendar is really five calendars in one. Each representing a specific cycle.

i know. But we use leap year so the date is swayed. Our July 1 isn't the same date as the original July 1. Also leap year is made because a day Is 24.5 hours long. And .5 or whatever it is adds up. I'm throwing a big 2012 party on that day; it's going to be EPIC!

All I know is I'll be cracking up when I'm watching 2012 in 2013

Exactly WE use leap year in our Gregorian calendars. The Mayans did not use a gregorian calendar. They used their own calendar. There are many, many calendars out there. All different. look up Julian calendat, or Hebrew, or Japanese. Also leap year is made because a day Is 24.5 hours long. And .5 or whatever it is adds up.
No. It's actually 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds. Just under 24. If it was 24.5, we would be subtracting days, not adding. But I also think I'm wrong because of what u said.
Exactly.

And here is some interesting calendar history for you Cow. Did you know that before they came up with the leap year system, they actually altered the date by SEVERAL days at different times to make corrections? I'd have to look it up, but I think the last big correction was during George Washington's days, when they adjusted the date by I think 15 days. I believe there was another correction prior, where they altered the actual date by 22 days.

Well I figure since we have nothing to look forward to after 2012, might as well look to the past, right? ;)
-
OK. I looked it up again. The dates were adjusted as the various countries adopted the gregorian calendar.
