What happens with the radioactive waste (spent uranium?) isn't it just buried for a future generation to deal with?

1. Low level waste. Waste such as slightly radioactive waste paper, overalls etc. are sent to landfill. No harm done.
2. Medium level waste. Buried in sealed caverns hundreds of meters uderground. Again, no harm done.
3. High level waste, spent fuel rods etc. stored above ground in caskets (search train crash test on youtube) extremely safe, no leaks. A future method would be subduction zone disposal. Put it at a subduction zone and it gets sucked down to the earths core.

Fukushima was caused by the massive tsunami swamping their costal defences. This in turn flooded the backup diesel generators so no fresh water could be pumped in. An increase in hydrogen then ignted and destroyed the building the reactor was housed in. Control rods shut down the reaction but it was still very hot. Despite water and graphite beig dropped in from helicopters and fire engines the fuel rods melted and flowed into the containment vessel. (meltdown) before this happened an area of 20km around the reactor was evacuated. No deaths resuted and no long term health effects are expected. What about the thing in Japan?

Australia don't have any, even though we have the richest source of uranium in the world and thousands of miles of unpopulated land. What are we afraid of?

Is the uranium or the leftover radioactive waste more dangerous?
-
UnknownAssassin wrote:
Good question. The answer is the uranium (once it has been refined) as the waste is more dilute and treated afterwards. However this does not apply to all of the waste, for example ceasium 137 is a very dangerous gas that is produced and has a half life of over 900,000 years. Is the uranium or the leftover radioactive waste more dangerous?

Well, the uranium has a half life of 3.5 billion years I believe.UnknownAssassin wrote:

Has the process of nuclear fusion been made efficient yet?

Chernobyl 1986, that wasn't very safe or clean, was it?

You won't believe the amount of technological advances we have made since then :') -

America is also working on carbon cleaning of the air. So our past impurities are being cleaned. However, counties like China, Brazil, and India are polluting more than America can clean and they don't care.

What is a neclear reaction and how can it be stopped?

The process is generally where fuel rods react with another substance producing large amounts of heat which turn water into steam which power generators. The only way to stop one is to remove the rods after flooding the tank with a deactivating substance which will slow the process down. that could take months to years. What is a neclear reaction and how can it be stopped?

Ah, so nuclear power is safe....right up until the moment it fails.
i can only think of 3 nuclear accidents in my life: 3 mile island, chernobyl, fukishima. as bad as the last 2 were there is still no way there were as many deaths as there are caused by mining accidents, drilling accidents, lung disorders & other deaths associated with the recovery of fossil fuels but no one ever has a problem with most of our energy coming from them. nuclear just gets the sensational news coverage when something goes wrong. no energy source comes without a cost. the important part is making it as safe as realistically is possible.

Are you genuinly trying to put forward the view that America is trying to save the world when it also has not signed up to the kyoto protocol, and remains the largest polluter in the world.
It is the smaller countries of the world who are taking the lead in "cleaning" the world, whilst the largest polluters continue to go against the grain and remain opposed to new pollution agreements.
Nuclear is safe in so far as its rare for it to go hugely wrong. However, when it does.....the world suffers. There are also continueous "small" leaks on a yearly basis by most nuclear facilities.

Ok I am back.
A few points. First the half life of uranium is not 3.5 billion years, only a few tens of thousands.
Secondly only 54 people died as a result of chernobyl and nobody died from fukushima. Thus it is very safe compared to other sorces, e.g Renewable (thousands die when dams burst)
Thirdly a nuclear reaction is constantly cooled, and to stop it control rods are inserted. These absord the neutrinoes produced by the chain reaction so it does not continue. This starts working immidiately and only takes a few hours to a few days to complete.
And finally the whole world does not suffer from a meltdown, it is extremely localised and often is contained withen 20 kilometers.

Why not use solar power? Put a few panels on every rooftop. Problem solved.

Here are the main reasons:Why not use solar power? Put a few panels on every rooftop. Problem solved.
1. It is horribly inneficient, it utilizes only 5% of the energy it recieves. Nuclear uses 70%
2. Solar panels are made with indium tin oxide, we use this in touch screens and only have ten years supply left.
3. It is unreliable, as we do not get sunlight all the time.
