Just curious here. But to all of those saying "it's just a dumb animal, who cares" do you know what a food chain is, and how it works? How about an ecosystem, and how it works? And the fact that how one little adjustment to either a food chain or ecosystem can collapse the entire thing, and cause a MASSIVE impact world wide. I think all you who say "who cares" should go read up on a few things before commenting on subjects like this ๐

Excuse me. I work for the fisheries service.
If laws are being broken in the course of fishing in international waters, the law is enforced, rest assured.
With one glaring exception... A bunch of vegan pusses playing at pirate get away with breaking international law, and thanks to the leniency of the Japanese Navy, Paul Watson and his band of narcoleptic liars still live.
The truth is, what the Japanese are doing is in compliance with US treaties for limited whale harvesting.
Therefore, as far as we are concerned, the only criminals are the "Sea Shepards".
I cheer on the whalers. It's good entertainment that way, since the Watsonites are melodramatic, ineffectual idiots, and constantly get their asses handed to them.
All fisheries are important to maintain. We are doing our best to do so. But that doesn't mean saving a whale, that means making sure there are enough to eat. ๐บ๐ณ๐ฃ๐๐๐

Whale dies.
Nothing to eat plankton. Plankton reproduces rapidly.
Plankton begin photosynthesis.
Carbon dioxide levels in world decrease.
Temperature cools and returns back to average tempature of first discovery of fossil fuels.
Ice Caps stop melting possibly refreezes? -
Another possibility...
Whale dies.
Plankton reproduce rapidly.
Tiny fish have more to eat. Reproduce faster too.
Bigger fish have more to eat so breed more too.
Top predator has more to eat so breed more too.So overall there will be more sharks in the sea?
It's fun trying to work out the changes that happen in the food chain. Entertains me :3 -

The worst possible long term effect I can think of by following this path is if the plankton use too much carbon dioxide therefore hindering other important plant growth such as wheat ect.Superyan wrote:

How do you know the temp decrease would stop at pre fossil fuel temps? What if it continued to get colder? Bring another ice age. The outcome is never easy to determine, as anything is possible. Does that mean go forth and "hope" for the best? Why do you think mankind is trying to "go green"? Global warming or climate change is real, and the outcome is unknowable but the possibilities are detrimental. Long term thinkingKevster ๐บ๐ธ๐๐ซ wrote:

Long term thinking, we are still burning a lot of crap and releasing a decent amount of carbon dioxide. We won't go into another Ice age because the plankton will die off before that.
Then CO2 will build up again, they will reproduce again making it go down. Then they will die off. Repeat the process. -
Superyan wrote:
How do you know this will happen? The oceans are becoming more and more acidic each year. Coral reefs at dying world wide. You think everything will fix itself but it may not. Nothing is a for sure. Anything can and will happen. With the amount of fresh water entering the ocean (due to melting ice) the ocean current could shift or stop. Instantly bringing on another ice age. That current only works with the right water/salt mix. It's already been proven that it is slowing down. Any small change in a food chain or ecosystem can cause a massive problem world wide.Long term thinking, we are still burning a lot of crap and releasing a decent amount of carbon dioxide. You think this thread only involved whales. But whales are apart of a system far greater then just them and their food. They are apart of everything on earth, as are we.

An ice age isn't going to wipe out the planet. -

7 billion people face an ice age. Billions die and rot in the streets as people flee south. The viruses that would arise from rotting flesh could wipe out mankind. Major cities would war zones as people fight for food and water. Could mankin survive and ice age? Yes. Most likely country folk, people who less rely on tech amd know how to survive off the land. Just because humans survived the last one, doesnt mean humans of today could. We have guns, they didn't.Kevster ๐บ๐ธ๐๐ซ wrote:

An ice age would "cleanse" the planet that's for sure. Many species would be destroyed. But life would go on. Unknowable if mankind would be part of that life that survives. It is possible tho, but I see it as unlikely tho. Maybe humans that live in third world countries or people in tribes that rarely see outside their "territory". As they still resemble our ancestors and their way of life. Anyways, this has been a fun chat. But I must go to bed. I hope this has opened your mind a bit and made you question yourself or want to learn more. I love learning new things. I'm always asking questions and trying to fun answers. Good night and if you want we can chat some more tomorrow?

We can remove PlanktOn from the water just saying, if humans have to interfere with the ecosystem we will.

Just like we did a good job removing oil from the Gulf (of Mexico) ecosystem?
I think the point that is missed in this thread is that whaling is more moral than legal. The Sea Shepherds have a far greater moral case than a legal one. Their concerns are legit, and barring a legal grounds to stop it, they throw stink bombs and ride other ships closely. I personally beleive that a decade without whaling "could" restore populations to a less strained level.
However the chaotic side of me would like to see a Japanese whaler ship fire a harpoon at the Steve Irwin in counter-protest.
-
I would also note that the international community spoke its piece at the sinking of the Ady Gil. The fault was put entirely on the Sea Shepherds, despite the fact the whalers appeared to have intentionally rammed a disabled vessel.
