Raising animals to eat!
Forums › General Discussion › Raising animals to eat!-
SO I plan on raing a couple chickens and rabbits for food. I will be doing this at my sisters place an her 4 kids all under 12 will feed them and watch them for me. Then when it comes time they will help me slaughter them.
Just wondering your thoughts on this. Is this something you would do yourself if you could? -
I would do it.
-
No I wouldn't do this if I could.
-
Just hope they don't get too attached... Slaughtering an almost pet would be a pretty hard job.

Planning on getting some bison as well as some chickens here in Oklahoma. I checked into it a little you have to have 10ft tall fences and it has to be inspected and approved by some state official so you can have bison. But there meat is worth it so I'm doing it for sure.
-
That's awesome bison would be great plus you get the coat could use it as a rug or coat or something. I'm gonna start small maybe expand into other things later! Maybe exotics snakes and such. Nothing like free range that's for sure. Plus these are all animals I can get for free from kijiji. I would t eat those ones but the young should be good to eat. I hope

If i had children i would do it, its about time kids saw where their food came from, not just expect it on a plate thinking it was made like that and not from an animal

Awesome idea. Kudos to you.

Are you kidding me?!?!? OMG they are delicious!!!! I remember being 5-6 yrs old and my neighbor going rabbit hunting. He'd bring them home and lay them out on the driveway. 20-30 of them. My mom an I would go over and get 3-4 and take them inside and cook them. Sooooooo good. Seriously try it sometime. There are a lot of really nice restaurants that serve it.Who the fuck eats rabbits?!?! Ewwww!

Doc, I'm coming over when you get them. I'd love to see them.
-
We did it when I was a child, hass chickens, sheep, and cows. Wish I could do it with my kids, but don't have the room.

Rabbits and chickens go well together. Whatever falls out of the rabbit cages gets eaten by the chickens. And I doubt the kids will get attached to the rabbits. They are not pets and are not very huggable. Kind of nasty, scratchy, fight meat bundles. They scream when you go to butcher them and once the first one screams the others get scared and fidgety when you approach them.

Been raising ducks, chickens and geese for two years now. Eggs and meat are delicious. And the geese scare the raccoons and other animals that could kill the ducks and chickens off.
-
I probably wouldn't do it only because I don't think I'd be able to chop the head off of a chicken (or slit its throat). I'm not against slaughtering animals and I'm not squeamish either, just don't think I could actually bring myself to do it. Have fun though! The meat's sure to taste fresh! 🐽🐔

I've been living in shanghai quite a while and feed my cat a raw meat diet that has consisted of chicken, duck, pigeon, and rabbit. All have been slaughtered in front of me and while i'm not morally opposed to eating meat, there is definitely an unsettling feeling when watching the life drain from an animal being slaughtered. Rabbits are particularly hard but even seeing a chicken die can strike feelings of remorse or guilt.
Additionally, you're going to need a lot of chickens and rabbits to have any type of "sustainable" food source = lots of killing.
Think about all the ramifications before you invest time and effort into this endeavor.
-
Well if you are relying on young children to feed them, I hope they dont starve to death before you get round to slaughtering them! Lapin a la moutarde (rabbit with mustard) mmmmmmmm delish!
-
One of my local restaurants does a brilliant rabbit stew. Yum yum yum
I'd be perfectly happy to slaughter my own animals. My own view is if you arnt willing to kill animals, you shouldn't really be eating them
-
Go fishing instead. Nothing like a nice mackerel caught, gutted and grilled within a couple of hours. Mmmm
-
My dad actually got chickens and now my brother and I are stuck taking care if them. A fair warning is that ours died quite quickly due to how hot it was in the summer and our step mom wouldn't let then stay in the garage with proper cooling.

A good call. I hunted rabbits in my earlier days. Lived on a farm for years. It amazes me that people don't understand how a pig for example gets to become 'Bacon'. It's also ironic that if we all become vegetarian then pigs, cows, etc would cease to be. Without commercial value they would be no use and therefore would be disposed of. I also only buy meat from a local butcher. Supermarket meat is complete shit.

I look forward to the weeks when one of the local farmers markets run. Meat and fish from them is a joy to eat
