There are a lot of people on TW, so I figured this would work.
Those of you that have .30-06 or are very knowledgable with firearms, which would be better to shoot as far as accuracy at 100 yes goes: a lighter or heavier grain bullet? I'm shooting my M1 Garand, and would like to compete in a CMP shoot, but I cannot really tell the difference (It's a new gun and I've only been able to shoot about 70 rounds through it and it's not quite dialed in yet.) Which is more accurate or better to shoot with?
By the way, I love the gun. They're a blast to shoot!

At 100 yards heavy. If ur trying for 300 or more go light. Only problem with a light round is how easy they are to deflect. A blade if grass can through the light round off. That's why that gun is called a "brush gun". The heavier round can fire through brush and still kill a deer. The lighter rounds will hit a twig and deflect.

I'd agree overall but for target shooting you wont have deflection issues. Lighter, less grains, will shoot faster, flatter and generally more accurate. At 100 yards a Garand will drive tacks if it is in good condition. Different bullets of the same grain will shoot differently AI be sure to try different brands and keep track of your group size to see what works best.
I know there are some marksmen on here so I'll stop and let them take over.
Have fun! (squeeze don't pull ;-)

I prefer the 180 grain hornady ballistic tips, I have the weatherby 30-06 and use it more for hunting in the woods, but I agree with ottonorse, the lighter bullet would be better for target shooting

My bad. Got carried away and forgot there really isn't a deflection issue. Side note; if u are going to target shoot competitively get into hand loading. It gives u a consistent shot.

I want to load my own ammunition, but my dad isn't too keen on loading high-powered rifle rounds since they can go very wrong very fast. And since I live in his house for the time being, I'll have to wait a little. I did notice that the lead tipped ones tend to jam when they are being fed into the boar (it is a semi-auto so the only way to fix it is to not use those) because th tip is a little big and catches, while the normal tipped ones were fine. So if I do use anything, it won't be those. My bad. Got carried away and forgot there really isn't a deflection issue. Side note; if u are going to target shoot competitively get into hand loading. Thanks for the suggestions, but what does anyone else think? Do you concur?
