If you think about it, an alliance is always nice, if you are getting beat down what are you gonna do? I know you would mob up ASAP but what about while you are doing it? I like having those friends that can back me up and I feel bigger and a lot better when I back my tiny friends up!

We play a similar style. In fact most of the Aussie players I have met and like play like this.
It's the best way I reckon. It enables you to still cap and move around without really pissing someone off. A little diplomacy also goes a very long way. Something I learnt very early.
