ANZAC day. Relevance in this day and age.
Forums › General Discussion › ANZAC day. Relevance in this day and age.-
Ok, Anzac day is like our biggest day of the year in my book. Fuck Aussie day, fuck Chrisy.
And I'm all worked up because of an article I just read. It was an article written by to pencil pushing academics questioning the relevance of Anzac day.
Their main argument. "the ww1 Vets are nearly all gone"
Well the days about honouring our fallen dead is it not? Lest we forget?
They also say its just another bogan piss up.
I don't no about anyone else. But I make my way to the dawn service every year. Pay my respects. And have a quiet beer for my great grandfather. Hardly a party atmosphere.Then. I read another article by another academic, this time an immigrant (I won't say we're from, it's not the point in trying to make), criticising Anzac day saying it "glorifys white male australians"
? No, it pays respect to the Anzacs, of all colours and creed.
I have much more to write down. But I will leave it at that. -
Besides your spelling I totally agree with you on the importance of ANZAC day. This is not just about Gallipoli but all conflicts that Australia and New Zealand have contributed too. That includes the current ones. It is not about glorifying anything. It is about honoring those who passed before their time in the genuine belief that their sacrifice would permit others to live longer and happier lives.

The French still have Bastille day that was 1789 . Are we to forget everything that has shaped out nations due to the passing of time . Should our grandchildren say I don't care about people who died in WWII etc as that was ages ago ?? People should have more respect . I was asked the other day by some 18 year old oi mate was Dunkirk in Ireland or Belgium ?? I was like wtf. And he was I don't know all that was before I was born . Just goes to show its a sad indictment on our present society . If hitler had invented the iPad he would probably be a hero now

I give mad props to ANZAC day. The first time I heard about it was when I was in Burma. There was a nice ceremony honoring those who sacrificed at the British and Commonwealth cemetery. The three Ambassadors gave a speech and then hosted an event at the Armed Forces park. The message I received was to honor your heros who gave all and sacrificed for others. As an American, I fully respect ANZAC day. It carries the same weight as our Veterans and Memorial day. What was the quote, "they gave their tomorrow, so we can have our today."

I have full respect for those men in that battle that inspired the day and who served New Zealand and Australia. Doesn't matter where you are or who you are, giving respect doesn't belong to any one person or thing.
-
Excuse my French but anyone who opposes it can go fuck themselves. Having a great grand father who served and died Giving these assholes the freedom of speech they have now I find it disrespectful that they question it's relevance.

All relevant points. "good onya Diggers".

It is a bit shit how watered down it's become with each subsequent generation. A lot of people that I know here in NZ just think of it as a day off work. Having said that, there has also been a real resurgence in peoples awareness of the importance of what an amazing sacrifice was made for the paradise we in NZ and Australia enjoy today.

Lol, I remember a former Prime Minister of Australia referred to us as being the arse end of the world. Well I generally think we have it pretty good down here. And that is thanks to the sacrifices made by the men and women of our defence forces. It is a bit shit how watered down it's become with each subsequent generation. They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.Lest We Forget.

Who the fuck would actually have a problem with us having a memorial day? Our men fought, our men died, and we honour them. Fuck anyone who thinks its over because the last WW1 vet has finally died.
Most of my grandfathers were in that war, or WW2. They are great men, whom I honour.
Any immigrant who doesn't like it had better not come near me or they'll get what's coming, and that's coming from a guy who's never racist.
