I've used BOINC as my screensaver for a bunch of years... Run 90% SETI@home and 10% Rosetta@home and racked up almost 1.2 million work units (just one slow CPU)

Also, I run it in the background continuously & allow it to take up to 20% of the CPU while it's busy & 95% when idle. I have never noticed any impact on performance.
