In the early hours of Sunday, June 20th Bort was savagely beaten and ultimately destroyed. Who destroyed him and why are not important. This post isn’t about them. It’s about Bort. And turfs like Bort.
I remember when Bort was placed, just a single little pinhead in a seemingly endless google map. Like many new turf owners I struggled with many of the common decisions one must make. When is a turf old enough to wear graffiti? When do you have that awkward conversation about protecting your loading dock? Still, seemingly within seconds, Bort was fully grown.
I’ve often wondered were turfs come. Where are all the bits and bytes before they are all called upon to become turfs? Perhaps Bort was made out of left over 1’s and 0’s from Germanic midget porn files on Nick’s hard drive. Who knows? Perhaps questions best left for computational philosophers.

The first attack came in the early hours of the morning and I happened to be around to repair. The attacks eventually stopped and I tried to assure Bort that the worst was over. I think somehow Bort knew I was not telling the truth. But, if it really knew, it didn’t let on.
Later in the morning I awoke and the sky seemed particularly angry blocking out the sun as if it had done something wrong. I clutched my iPhone and saw I had 138 News items. Scrolling frantically I saw it – Bort was destroyed.
In the game we play I’ve seen players’ emotions run over them. They say things that can’t be unsaid and see things that can’t be unseen.
But, stuck in the crossfire of all this vitriol are innocent little turfs. Turfs like Bort.
Bort had a world of potential ahead of him. Perhaps in some combination of cosmic rays, toxic radiation and a lightning storm it could’ve achieved sentience and went on to cure cancer. Who can say?
All I know is that Bort is gone. RIP Bort 6/16 – 6/20
