Should it be illegal? They've been trying in California. Arguments are its cruel to the sharks as a pro for illegilsation. The other side says its racist as it specifically targets the Asian people.

Here's my take. Although its wasteful and a bit cruel to the animal I don't think the government should tell people theu can't consume a specific dish. It should be allowed but the harvesting should be regulated

Please, it isn't 'racist' for one. Also, maybe let the shark population grow for 20+ years at least and reduce the allowed shark fishing amount by 70% to help the population of sharks grow without major issues as before.

Personally I have no idea if there is a shortage. I just assume since everything is pretty much endangered in this modern world.

Several breeds are. I confess to not be overly proficient in the subject of which sharks make soup. It is wasteful as they cut the fin off and throw the still living shark back in the water without it.

I myself am not literate in knowledge of sharks extensively either.
But I agree it is wasteful. This might end up like the pioneers with the buffalos, killing them fir sport or the skin but leaving the meat and everything else to rot. At least use moat if the shark like Indians used the buffalo stomachs as water containers.

To be honest even though I'm an animal lover I think it should be allowed. In fact, I think consumption of any animal (besides endangered) should be allowed as long as the animal is killed humanely and the consumption amount is moderated and not excessive.

It's the circle of life and the food chain, the bigger and stronger survive and the smaller and weaker are eaten. Sorry if my view is a bit blunt but that's how it is, and if it is "cruel" why not do something about the millions of cattle who are exported live to Indonesia and have their heads kicked in and bones broken before they are slaughtered, if THIS is allowed why not anything else.

My answer is if it's part of their culture they should be allowed to do it provided they aren't doing it in such a way to further endanger the already endangered species of tigers

I just did an Essay on this in Chinese class. I think there shouldn't make it legal in the US but for china it's too late so they should just make a law that only allows a certain amount if Shark fins.
