I teach 4th grade. I ride a Harley to work and teach gun safety at the range on the weekends to my faculty and staff as well as many of my students.
I don't fit the typical profile of an elementary school teacher.

My school is a brain-based hands on type of learning. We don't give grades. It's basically pass fail. I grade them on how well they understand the material as opposed to giving them a number grade.

I also use music to help guide my lessons, discipline, and classroom management. I play everything from The Beatles to Linkin Park to George Strait.

What we do is I study what type of a learner my students are and I teach them in a way that they relate to the material. If my class is visual, I use lots of pictures. If they are mostly auditory, I will do a lot of lecture. I teach in a way that fits their needs and the way that they learn best. We do not sit and work out of a text book. I have books but they supplement what I do. They do not guide my teaching like they would in a traditional school.

I have my Principal Certification but the jobs are pretty scarce right now with little to no funding from the state. For now, I am stuck in the classroom.

Souds better than getting percents. Shows how well they know the material with a pass or a fail. I think you should come teach at the high school here. That description beats most of the teachers here. 😉 Also teaching with music is unique. Anyway to teach them to love school and not hate it is good 👍

The problem with percentages is that if a child gets 50's and 60's on papers and quizzes but then they all of a sudden understand the material, they are still suck with a C average at best even though they now understand the concepts. Basically, they get a shitty average due to the fact that they previously did not understand the material. In my school, if they understand the concepts before the grading period, they get full credit. I dont punish their grades because they struggled. Granted if they still do not understand when grades are due, their overall grade will be reflected and explained but I will continue to work on that specific objective throughout the year until they do get it.

Yeah exactly that how it kinda is with me. I got a couple 70% but now I fully understand the material. I'm stuck at a C+
