Random List #9
Forums › General Discussion › Random List #9-
I was watching "High Fidelity" today & I'm stealing a list idea from it.
Top 5 Songs About Death
In the movie, the 5 they chose were:
1. The Shangri-Las - "Leader of the Pack"
2. Jan & Dean - "Dead Man's Curve"
3. Ray Peterson - "Tell Laura I Love Her"
4. Madness - "One Step Beyond"
5. Gordon Lightfoot - "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" -
This is my very tentative, very rough draft Top 5 list. My entries are subject to change. These are the top 5 off the top of my head.
1. Pearl Jam (cover of J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers) - "Last Kiss"
2. Pink Floyd - "Great Gig in the Sky"
3. Deathcab for Cutie - "Soul Meets Body"
4. Jewel - "Adrian"
5. Blue Oyster Cult - "Don't Fear the Reaper" -
O Death - Ralph Stanley
Death Letter - White Stripes
Farewell and Goodnight - Smashing Pumpkins
Girlfriend in a Coma - The Smiths
I Am The Resurrection - The Stone Roseswhat a morbid topic :)
-
I know :) I was just gonna say that.
Ooh, "Girlfriend in a Coma"- good one. But technically, does it work? Does she die? I can't remember... If she dies, I'm definitely changing #5 to that. And if not, I'm changing #5 to "First of the Gang to Die" - The Smiths (or is it just Morrissey??)
-
I could make the whole list from songs by the smiths! But I didn't for the sake of variety. Not sure about first of the gang to die, but there's also 'cemetry gates' one of my favourite of all time. It's about death, but if you ignore the words it's a happy song. I guess that applies to all smiths stuff though doesn't it!
-
And girlfriend in a coma ends on 'it's serious' so I assume she isn't gonna make it!
-
Mariner's Revenge- The Decemberists
Gloomy Sunday- I don't know who it's by.
This one song by Death Cab for Cuties that goes "love of mine someday you will die."
Rime of the Ancient Mariner- Iron MaidenThat's all I can think of.
-
There's so many by the smiths!
'Pretty girls make graves'
'The Queen is dead'And bella, have you heard 'every day is like Sunday' by morissey? It's like my favouritest song ever. Makes a big man all weepy.

yeah, I noticed earlier that you quoted it (i think on the "summer gas day" thread?) I love love love the smiths. My favorite is "Asleep" OOH! that's about death too. K, that's my new #1. Everything else moves down one spot. I actually got to see Morrissey on Halloween of...2003 or 2004.There's so many by the smiths!

Yeah, no idea why I quoted it there, it rhymed and was in my head I spose.
I do indeed live in a seaside town which they forgot to close down, which is quite cool (it's a shithole)
My favourite has to be 'what difference does it make' - very very powerful stuff!

Still Life-Iron Maiden
The Pass-Rush
Code Blue-T.S.O.L

-
1. say hello 2 heaven-
temple of the dog
2. love is blind- eve
3. tomorrow, wendy-
concrete blonde
4. angles- scroobius pip vs. dan le sac.
5. all of the arcade fire album, 'funeral.' and a lot of Elliott smith. -
1. Bilingual - Remy Ma & Ivy Queen
This song is just appalling, disrespectful, mean, etc. But I like it.
Don't know too many other songs involving death since I usually like "Summery Songs".

I hate to be a good-for-nothin' bumper & thread necromancer, but there are a lot of people who weren't around when I made this series of threads & I have a few specific people in mind that would probably dig this one & totally participate. Here it is, back from the dead. Enjoy.

The similarities are starting to creep me out a little actually.
