I am new to this and have been targeting my nearest rival, both geographically and in terms of influence etc. He is now messaging me telling me to f&£@ off - is he just being a sore loser because I'm takin his turf (he has 7 to my 4 btw) or is it bit the point of the game to go to war and beat down your rivals??

Keep hitting him.

I'm doing the same to two people right now. I told them I was only going to take 2 turf, and then they had the cheek, nay, the ordasity to try and take them back. So now everything they own that I can get to, is going to be mine. I'll just be pissed if they tore down or reset.

Yeah, I'm heading that way, he is trying to recruit and get a vendetta on me now I think but I'm gonna take his turf and tear it down now, just to do him in!
