What are your opinion on workforce unions? I think that they're not as good as they were in the past.
-
They don't exist in Wisconsin anymore. Walker destroyed them.

Well the ones I tried to join once had tons of restrictions lots of union dues and lots of mandatory meetings. And if they strike then your a scab if you work. How else am I supposed to feed my family? For some good for some bad I guess is all I can say.

With all the modern labor laws I think they are archaic, irrelevant and usually abused now.

They have put a lot of companies out of business and cost a lot of people jobs.

Yea, it's just protection for the lazy man. It makes me kinda sad knowing what the UMWA fought for during the mine wars and what it has become.

Part of what has decimated America's middle class is the decline of the union. Y'all need to study some labor law. Almost all the worker's rights any of us enjoy were fought for, often literally. 8 hour days, overtime, paid sick leave, etc. Labor union people literally died to get us those privileges. There was a time in the US when we had plenty of union manufacturing jobs that paid well, and our middle class and economy flourished. Now, that is all disappearing, and, well, look at us now.
As a union member and ex union steward, I agree some lazy fucks take advantage and don't do shit, but believe me, they're an integral part of our work force, and our economy did just fine when unions were alive and well.

We still have unions in WI just not as many public unions. Thank you Scott Walker saved millions of $$$. Unions had their time & we are past that. When you start a business you are the boss you make the decisions, what pay, benefits, etc. unions came along & tell you how to run your business.

Trade unions yes. Labor unions no.
Labor unions arent improving quality of life or workplace safety anymore depending on the federal government to do that (OSHA primarily). I think they need a lot more OSHA inspectors personally. Ideally one on site daily for every location with x number of violations or complaints a year.
Labor unions aren't working to provide any measurable benefit to their members or the companies that employ them. Thus I consider them another drain on society.
In a past life we alway hired union electricians and pipe fitters (as long as they could guarantee a journeyman or master on site during the whole job) because we could count on them.

Dam your unions up there in America must really suck!!! The majority of unions here in OZ are pretty good. Always fighting the good fight. I have uncles and cousins who are/have been union delegates and they love it. Always fighting for their workers etc etc. I saying that I'm not a member of our union at my work. Mainly because they're weak.

I will say that Teacher's unions, in the state they are now, are severly crippling education in America

Seriously? Scott walker got rid of collective bargaining. He destroyed one of the basic rights that people working should have. Hopefully Wisconsin will get some democrats after the recall and they'll be able to fix at least some of the mess that walker and his republican friends created. We still have unions in WI just not as many public unions. What ever you need to do to pay the bills union or not that's fine. Just don't come onto my jobsite and wave signs in my face bc my company outbid yours for the job.

Before all the workforce and labor departments and laws they were needed. Today they are nothing more than political and power machines for those in power.

All you pro union guys and those who think that they are so grand should take a look at how unions really started. People are mislead into believing that they were started to increase workplace safety and wages. In reality unions began because more minorities, mainly blacks, we're being hired. There is a lot of documentation about it. Do some research. There are pictures of pickets back when they began showing the union members carrying signs saying hire whites and made by white men.
It was only after they failed in keeping blacks from taking trade positions that they started trying to change the conditions and pay. You can also thank organized crime for the growth. Had it not been for the mafia and their scams etc that revolved around the union and their influence they would have dissolved long ago. That's one of the biggest reasons that they are declining today.

What the unions originally stood for was worthwhile. Unfortunately too many crooks spoil the broth. The ones that make the media come across as self serving, greedy and crooked.
