Defragmenting

So I was defragmenting my grandmas computer the other day and thought to myself, will iPods/iPads/iPhones need defraging after using them for so long?

No, because of the type of memory (flash-based).

Ahh that's right I couldn't remember whether it was flash based or not. Is there any other explanation why my iPod is running slower than normal then? I like to keep around 1gig memory free and it's an 8 gigNo, because of the type of memory (flash-based).

Its probably slow because of all the process"s running in the background

Processes tend not to have much effect on iPod. But iOS can show signs of wear. I would reccomend a restore or even DFU

Fragmentation happens on any device but definition flash base devices (because of wear leveling technology) will always be as evenly fragmented as possible so the performance hit will always be present and fairly consistent. Fragmentation is really only something to worry about on FAT formatted hard drives under windows. NTFS and any *nix file system doesn't suffer from the fragmentation problem nearly a much.
