Clans?

Ok... So I'm a noob.. I get that... And this is a stupid noobish question.. But how do clans work exactly?
I used to play a pirate based rp game , and they had fleets , so I'm familiar with the concept, but I haven't seen any clan pages or clan tags etc... So how do you join and what is the benefit?
I'll sit back in my noobish ignorance and wait to be enlightened

Their are advantages and disadvantages. Advantage is that you have have a group that will help in each in the time of need. The disadvantages being you can get in serious shit from other players who are against the alliance members or cause.

You can tell some alliance by the content of their names, but most you can't.

There are a few clans or 'alliances' that use clan tags but most these days tend not to broadcast their membership.
