Is a Route 66 hop possible?
Forums › General Discussion › Is a Route 66 hop possible?-
My big bro and I had always dreamt of doing a coast to coast using the famous route 66. We'll never do it together now.
Has anyone hopped coast to coast US before? Swagger? :)

I'd say it's unlikely: Too many dead spots through the west. Definitely a nice drive by car though 👍
-
Ah, shame.
Have you driven it? I still want to do it some day on a bike. Easy rider style... Minus the lsd etc.. :)
-
Swagger would have he has turf on the moon lol 👍
-
Bike would have to be comfortable, it's quite a ride

I've driven coast-to-coast a bunch of times. Full Rt 66 once: it's not what it once was, but it's still amazing -- especially in the West.

I'd love to ride that route, but I doubt it would be very comfortable on my CBR 929. I bet I would get there a lot faster though 😏

Wow. :) does it take long? I've seen tv shows about it. The scenery looks breath taking. Coming from a small town in england (which it pretty) it lacks the wow factor. Its a shame the bro wont make it but its still a dream im gonna pursue. :)📡Ǥadցet ѵ2📡 wrote:

However, a trike does sound like a good road trip idea... Thatd be interesting -

The comedian Billy Connoly (sp?)(you may know of him) did a show not too long ago of route 66, he did it on his trike. :)📡Ǥadցet ѵ2📡 wrote:

Very nice! Never saw that though... Was it a front two wheel trike, or a rear two wheel trike?
-
Did part of it back in the 90s ( Chicago to armerillo) regret not going all the way to Cali.

I did route 66 from Chicago to la in college as part of the solar car race that year. It's a pretty drive, I40 covers most of it if you don't like doing 50mph with a bunch of stops.
As for how long it takes to drive across the country it really depends on which direction and how you drive. I've done Indianapolis to Seattle in near whiteout conditions in wyoming and Utah in a bit under 3 days. I've done chicago to dc in a night. You could probably do something like 70 or 80 coast to coat fairly comfortably in a week.
-
I've done NY to SF in 3 days (rotating drivers & copious coffee) -- that is painful. 5 days is "comfortable", but if you want to actually see the sights along the way, I would plan for at least a 2 week excursion
-
Yeah I wouldn't like to rush a coast to coast. I figured to save the cash for a month trip and zig zag a little. :)

Once you're past Chicago there really isn't anything interesting until Denver or SLC. And Nebraska smells like cow pee.

But I love the smell of cow pee in the morning :)

Yeah if I found a group to ride along. Gets lonely on the rode after awhile.montana_mark wrote:

The zigging and zagging are definitely the best parts :)
I like Nebraska. It might smell like cow pee, but it's scenic and interesting. The state that makes me want to stick pins in my eyes just for something interesting to do is Kansas. Best avoided unless you find hundreds of miles of corn fascinating... It was an "experience" once, the next few times I crossed the state were unbearable; now I go well out of my way just to avoid. All you Kansans may object now.
Anyway, all that's beside the point. "Historic" Route 66 travels well south of both of those states, so you'll just have to deal with the doldrums of Oklahoma and North Texas before getting to the good bits :) At least there's cattle and oil wells along through there, which are infinitely more interesting than the endless corn.
