Why are attack and defense so useless?

I'm relatively new, so just wondering if anyone knows why these stats are so useless. Did the developers ever explain their thoughts on this?

At the very beginning I think they where useful. But they soon became obsolete.

I imagine that with only a few dozen people playing they made a difference but as soon as people could get hundreds and then thousands of mob members, it became pointless.

So that begs the question: why are those stats still in the game? So some newbie mistakenly wastes their points on them? Seems odd.

They were never useful and it has never been explained why they are there...
