Im getting smoked by a player.

They attack so I retaliate the best I can. They retaliate my retaliation and smoke me even more.

Unfortunately I don't make enough per hour to add defense to all of my turf. It also doesn't help when I have a mob of only 200+ vs like 2000+

Any advice on defense would be greatly appreciated.

Don't buy defense upgrades, they are worthless. Try diplomacy.

I am trying the diplomacy route, I asked him why he's picking on us little guys and that he's a bully lol
