Masons are not carpenters.

Masons are builders (cement/stone). The name Freemason comes from the fact that back in the olden days, masons were allowed to move "freely" across territories/borders in order to provide their services.

Once on a job site, they would find the master mason and provide a secret grip and password. This secret grip and password would inform the master mason on the site as to their level of skill and expertise which would in turn justify their wages. As a mason became more skilled, they would be given a new password and grip. The reason for this, there were no resumés or forms of background checks. This process took care of that for them. 👍
