I know if someone is too many levels ahead of you (or some similar measure of relative strength) then the don steps in and helps you, but does anyone know what the criteria for that is?

I thinks it based more on attack and defens ratings than level. Level doesn't matter much. A level 20 with 1000 mob can easily beat a level 70 with 500 mob.
