Which turfs to target?

I understand that you shouldn't attack a turf that could pay you protection money, but what about turfs just outside the protection money sphere? Are they the ones you should target? Are there any particular things I should look for when selecting a turf to take over?

Why target anyone in the early stages of your game? Grow your mob, plant your own turf, build up cash flow. In other words, get established before you worry about capturing somebody else's turf.

Good advice. But when I'm ready, what should I look for? Those turfs just outside the circle, should they be my target?

By that time, you should have identified somebody that has done you wrong or identified somebody that is bullying little guys. Or, you can be belligerent and start capping turfs of weaker players for the hell of it.
