Your attack & defense numbers reflect the number of mob members you have times the att/def stats of one (whichever ones you own that have the highest attack) weapon + one defense item (whichever ones you own that have the highest defense).

Your att/def skill points are added in to this number but are inconsequential so I wouldn't recommend wasting skill points on them.

Remember you can only use 1 weapon + 1 defense item per mob member. Anything beyond that is wasted.
