Do turfs multiply influence?

If there us one big competitor turf in my area and I put a smaller turf next to it, I immediately start paying him protection. But if I add another turf and combined my influence over his one is greater, do I then dominate or are both the smaller turfs now paying protection?

Both small turfs will pay protection.

Seems like a huge gap in the game doesn't it? So one huge turf could be complete surrounded by smaller, overlapping turfs covering 90% of the large and the large wins??
