The attack and defense stats don't seem to do anything, since guns and mob are the ones who raise actual attack an defense

They are a holdover from the old days. Back then, you rode around on dinosaurs and put these ivy shaped plants down (that’s why it’s still called ‘planting turf’ even today.) A/D was a big deal, but like your appendix and tonsils, they are useless vestiges that slow you down.
