Are they worth it, I'm making 60k and spending 52k on upkeep, do they help avaunt people capping my turf??

Not worth it. Best defense is a big, well armed mob. Save the money from the upgrades, go to turfwarsdb.com to build your mob, and use the money you save to arm them.

they are too small in numbers to make them effective to say the least

Definitely an area of improvement for the game.
