Attack distance

Just curious, how close do you have to be to attack another player (not their turf.) I've recently been attacked by some folks that are pretty far away, (I won't mention any names because that is the nature of this game and I bear no I'll will.) I'm just curious, can you attack any other player regardless of distance. Thank you in advance for any feedback.

It really is. Zoom out on the map and pick a country that's really far away and try to attack someone. It says on the popup message
