I have been claiming from my house where I started the game but a few days ago I was in real life riding in a car and when we stopped at different spots around town I tried to 'claim turf where the car was stopped and it let me. Is it ok to do this or is it a bug in the game? Is it cheating?

It's not cheating at all. People done this in the past, and today.

That is kinda the point of the game. Whenever I go somewhere new in real life, I claim some turf there.

This is most definately okay. This game isn't meant to be hermit simulator 2016. It is perfectly acceptable to plant turf at places other then your home

I know I just was not sure if it was ok to go somewhere and build instead of turf hopping. I thought you had to hop to get turf farther from where you first started the game.

As long as you hop up and down in real life, you should be ok :)
