Just wondering if it made any difference how close or far apart turfs were to each other.

Just build em where they make the most $.

I've seen players try to be cute and stack turfs or build them in little daisy patterns (like the folk who used to run Providence, RI for instance) but it didn't matter at end of day. One tip tho - the map can be helpful, like players can't build on water or off roads, etc so that can be useful.
