Hopping / Ranging?

Could someone please explain hopping and ranging to me?
I see the terms used in the forums often but not sure of exactly what they are. Also, why is it necessary and is it better than just staying put?
Thanks in advance.

Hopping refers to building a sequence of turf in the direction you want to travel. Ranging refers to a mob with a smaller cap radius inching close enough to a larger mob to cap him but not be capped himself. The distance each player can be capped from is directly proportionate to their mob size and can be modified down to 50% by the cap radius skill.

Roger that.
Does one need to max out influence to effectively hop? To pull down a 86 inf turf only gets 1.7 or 1.8 mil return but costs lots more than that to build. What's most effective hopping method?

Jim, lots of people hop differently with regards to influence. I have seen people use 75inf turfs, 86 inf turfs and 135 inf turfs.
I'm a 135inf guy. Try each way out and see which you prefer.
Depending on how populated on an area you are hopping through, it can be quite expensive such as hopping through an active airport. It can also be dirt cheap at $1k to plant the turf when hopping through the middle of nowhere.
It's always good to spread out and you should be on the lookout for good taxing opportunities nearby. Smaller turfs that you can tax are great and help you to establish a solid income.
