What do Melee weapons do?

I haven't actually purchased any, I've just received them from looting. I was wondering if they provide any significant increases to your stats

Each mob member will use 1 weapon, 1 melee and 1 armor provided that you have enough of each to arm every one of your mob. Obviously, the larger your mob size, the higher the increase will be if you add melee to your inventory.
