NOTE: I'm too cheap to spend real money on this game.

I have used my entire 35-turf allocation. They're all great turfs - full size PLUS protection income. I've removed my more marginal turfs to build superior ones. Given that I have no marginal turfs left, I'll be more selective in the future about building new ones.

That said, what can I do to expand my turf limit? I sometimes get a new turf when I level up, and I've also been using my Don points to expand my turf limit. But I don't level up as often now (at level 50) as I did in the past. Early in the game, my cash limited my total influence. Now I have enough cash ($778 million) to build hundreds of 86 influence turfs, but I'm limited to just 35.

Those are the only ways you can increase your turf limit without paying for don points. But redeem the don points you can increase your turf limit within 3 days.

Yea, just take over turfs if you're stronger than them. The problem is you can't build new turfs unless you increase your turf limit.
