What determines damage taken?

When I attack someone else, what determines the amount of damage I take? I'm finding that no matter who I attack, or whether I win or lose, I ALWAYS take the exact same amount of damage. So, I figured it is not determined by the opponent's stats, but must be driven by mine. So I went and bought a whole bunch more weapons and armor. Result: I still take the same amount of damage per hit. Bug???

Mine varies by opponent.

I take -8 whenever I hit someone, win or lose. I take a variable amount when someone else hits me (and it's much greater than -8!)

I always take 8 when attacking someone, but the damage they take varies I think depending on how powerful their defense is against my attack? Not 100% sure. I've always wondered the same.

Seems like it's hardcoded & independent of defense. Kindof weird.
