How is the turf prices calculated?

Just wondering cuz my first hour of playing they were 1k. Next hour 8k next day 16k. And today 34k. It just seems to be hard since I can't make much money as I am in an unpopulated location, and travelling through the turfs to a populated location is getting expensive and slow (.2 mi a day!) by the time I get to where I want to be I will be in Ohio where there are plenty of places for me to be and enjoy the game. So two questions. Any suggestions for an iPod touch user? And how are turf prices calculated?
