Can someone in your mob attack you?

I just logged in to find that someone that is/was in my mob had attacked me 8 times. Do you have to be outside of someone's mob to attack?

I've never attacked anyone.

Mob is just a number, once you grow almost everyone is in your mob. Don't worry about attacking people in it.
