We get about 2 or 3 threads on this in general discussion each week, so I thought I'd make a thread here and hope that nick makes it a sticky.

The emoticons you see people using (🚬💣🔫💊⚽😺❤etc) are from an app called emoji keyboard. Search it in the app store. I believe it is free. Then, after installing the app, go to:
-settings
-general
-keyboard
-international
-Japanese
-enable emoji keyboard.

You should now be able to access the emoji keyboard by hitting the small globe icon just to the left of your space bar, on your current English keyboard.

When I enabled mine it was under Japanese...

In 3G and lower, emoji can be enabled by getting the emoji app and going into languages under Japanese. In os4, it has it's own category on the keyboard options.

No. No app is needed. Go to settings than keyboard head down to Japanese and click ON for Emoji's.

It's not true. I didn't have emoji in my settings until i d/l'ed the app. I heard ipad comes with it though.

you need the app because it downloads the software. It's like a game you need to click on it
