My turf has been farmed like crazy the last few days - couple of guys hitting it 100-300 times a day. Even when the turf wins and it had a bunch of defensive upgrades, it still takes the same damage. What's the point of spending the money/upkeep on them if they don't help protect it?

It's based on your mob as well. Get as many people in your mobas possible and adequetly ATM them.
