Why do I win against a level 17 but now a level 27?

I attacked a level 17 with 50 mob and a level 27 with 460 mob or so, and I won against level 17 but not 27:/ I'm way better than both of them by alot and yet 27 wins??? Please explain

Without looking at the individual in question I would have to assume better defence through better weapons.
