I think there should be ratings on your diplomacy skills...how you might ask. Install a program on here that creates contracts so you can make alliances , if you break that contract your diplomacy rating will go down.. So at least you know who is a backstabber and who isn't...

I make a contract with player A that I will attack player B one time. I fulfill said contract. Repeat x100 and I am a master diplomat...

We already have alliances. We don't need a formal game system for them; that would be far too limiting.
